Screened Porch Under a Deck

Screens keep the bugs out. The deck above decides whether the porch stays dry. With an AmeriDex deck, rain sheds off the top instead of dripping through the boards, so the porch below starts with a dry space overhead.

Why the deck above matters

Dry overhead
Boards lock onto the Dexerdry seal, so rain stays on top of the deck.
No trough
Nothing hangs under the joists to collect debris or hold standing water.
Ceiling optional
Leave the joists open or add a vented vinyl or PVC soffit.
Real deck boards
PVC deck boards made in the USA, in seven colors plus TrueGrain.

How it fits together

Screened porch under an AmeriDex deck Side view of a deck attached to a house with a screened porch on the patio below. Rain lands on the sealed deck boards, runs across the top, and sheds off the outer edge past the drip edge. The joists and porch below stay dry. Screened porch planning checklist

  • Plan the deck and porch together. On a re-deck, the existing framing must meet the pitch and overhang requirements (see options for an existing deck).
  • Slope the deck 1/8 inch per foot away from the house.
  • If boards run away from the house, the framing leaves room for a gutter at the house. Place the porch ceiling and screens around it.
  • For a ceiling, use a vented vinyl or PVC soffit with at least 1 1/2 inches of continuous ventilated screen at the fascia. Wood ceilings are not recommended.
  • Keep it an outdoor space. Never install the system over interior living space.
  • Screens let in air, so wind-driven rain can still reach the edges. Place outlets, lighting, and furniture with that in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a screened porch under an AmeriDex deck?

Yes. A screened porch is outdoor space, and that is what AmeriDex is made for: decks, porches, and balconies with a patio, porch, or storage underneath. The deck above sheds rain off the top, so the porch gets a dry space overhead.

Do I need a drainage system or ceiling under the deck for a screened porch?

No. On an AmeriDex deck the boards lock onto the Dexerdry seal, so rain sheds off the top of the deck instead of dripping through the gaps. If you want a finished ceiling, use a vented vinyl or PVC soffit. Many owners leave the joists open.

What ceiling should I use over an under deck screened porch?

Use a vented vinyl or PVC soffit that allows airflow; wood ceilings are not recommended. Provide at least 1 1/2 inches of continuous ventilated screen at the fascia, or use a vented soffit throughout.

Can I add AmeriDex to an existing deck to make a porch below?

Yes, as a re-deck, if the existing framing meets the pitch and overhang requirements. The old boards come off and AmeriDex boards with the Dexerdry seal go on. A new deck lets you plan the slope and gutters from the start.

Can I turn the porch into a finished room later?

Talk to us before you plan that. The system is never installed over interior living space, so the space below should stay an outdoor porch, patio, or storage area.

Will rain blow in through the screens?

The deck keeps rain from dripping through from above. Screens are open to the air, so wind-driven rain can still reach the edges. Plan furniture, lighting, and outlets with that in mind.
